California Volunteers “Propelling” the Service Movement

To quote the Secretary of Service and Volunteering for California, Karen Baker, “Seven years ago, we embarked on an amazing journey to propel the service movement forward in California. Inspired by Governor Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver, we pressed forward with what we already knew – that service and volunteering are key strategies in addressing our communities’ most pressing needs.”  And propel she did!!!  California Volunteers set the stage for others to follow.  Secretary Baker was the first Cabinet Level Service Secretary in the United States.  New York soon followed.  California led the way, working with the corporate community with the establishment of the Business Partners Program.  In a state known for shaking, burning and flooding, Disaster Corps brought together those with the expertise to help during a time of crisis.  And AmeriCorps members are used in highly innovative ways to help solve problems.  I have the honor of chairing the State Commission and have not only had the pleasure of working with a great team of Commissioners but an extremely talented and dedicated staff.  I encourage you to spend a few minutes viewing this interactive presentation that not only chronicles the impact of California Volunteers but will also inspire others to replicate these important efforts.  http://californiavolunteers.org/index.php/nosub/legacy  The story is not over as last week we launched a new chapter in California with the inauguration of Governor, Jerry Brown.  We are hopeful, with his commitment to service that he will lead us at California Volunteers to new, challenging and impactful ways to inspire the 38 million California residents to make an important difference in their community.
