Environmentally Responsible Travel

As we look at how we can reduce our impact on the environment, many in the travel industry are doing their part.   TelePresence, SKYPE and other new technology tools are making it easier to conduct business anywhere and at any time.  Having said this, real time, face to face, meetings and experiences cannot be replaced by technology.  Airlines, hotels and car rental agencies are making it easier to lessen the impact while traveling.  United’s aircraft on order will be 20 to 30 percent more fuel efficient than the planes they will replace.  Existing planes are being modified to save fuel.  And through United’s eco-skies program, we now see flight attendants with two trash bags, one for recyclable objects and one for trash.  We can even use our Blackberry’s and iphones as boarding passes saving paper. http://www.united.com/page/article/1,,53740,00.html  In hotels, we have all gotten use to linens changed every three days, but this is only the start.  Hilton Worldwide has their Light Stay program that calculates sustainability performance impact across their global portfolio of hotels. The system’s data is used to improve the guest experience and drive economic returns.  This program, and many others, demonstrates how environmental efforts are good business as reducing impact often results in cost savings.  And as the traveling public is ever increasingly environmentally conscience, green travel is a differentiator that will drive business into the friendly skies and beyond.  www.hiltonworldwide.com/lightstay
