generationOn: Youth making a difference today!

Last week, I had an opportunity to attend an assembly for the Amber Charter School in New York.  This assembly was about service and honoring all of the students at this elementary school as the Grow Involved School of the Year.   Grow Involved Schools is a program of generationOn.   A representative from each grade went on stage and talked about what their class did to make the community a better place. Everyone played a role.  The 4th and 5th graders taught the service-learning lessons to the younger students.  An engaged and passionate faculty help guide the efforts of the students.  The next day, the school was out in force working in animal shelters, senior centers and other places throughout the community.  This is an amazing program that hopefully can be taken to scale.  generationOn is the youth service organization of the Points of Light Institute.  That evening, the 10th annual Art of Giving Benefit was held.  Silda Wall Spitzer and her team did an excellent job of organizing the evening on behalf of generationOn.  The highlight was hearing from four members of the National Youth Advisory Board.  These amazing individuals are doing incredible work not only in their own communities but encouraging youth to get involved across the country.  Brian Goldner, the CEO of Hasbro, was honored for his work championing youth service.  Last year, Hasbro made a $5 million contribution to generationOn.  With all of our work at Points of Light and the HandsOn Network, I see nothing more important than engaging the youth of today… Helping to set them on a path that will lead to not only a productive life for themselves but a life of working to make the world a healthier, safer and more prosperous place. generationOn.org
